AITKIN - The man who shot an Aitkin County sheriff's deputy Sunday at St. Cloud Hospital and then died afterward was facing seven felonies and had a warrant out for his arrest at the time. Danny Leroy Hammond, 50, was charged Oct. 12 in Aitkin County with kidnapping, second-degree assault, being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition and domestic assault.   Court records show that his wife had told him within the last two weeks that she no longer loved him and she wanted to end their marriage of 12 years. Court records show that Hammond kept his wife in their Glen Township home against her will beginning on Oct. 10, alternately putting a pistol to his head and to her head, saying that the two of them were together until "death do we part," according to a criminal complaint charging Hammond.
According to the criminal complaint, he forced her to eat rat poison and held her tight when they slept, so that if she tried to leave he would be awakened. His wife eventually was able to run from the house, but Hammond chased her down, pulled off her shirt and bra and dragged her back into the house by her hair, according to the complaint. He again played with the pistol, shooting at a television set in the house and telling his wife that he wished that she had been in front of the television, the complaint said. Hammond let her leave Oct. 11 and she went to her father's house, where sheriff's officials were called. The deputy who responded to that call was Investigator Steve Sandberg, the deputy who was killed Sunday morning at St. Cloud Hospital. Sandberg, 60, was monitoring Hammond, who was being treated at the hospital for medical reasons. Investigators and hospital officials have not said how Hammond got to the hospital or for what he was being treated. Investigators said that Hammond was not under arrest when he was at the hospital and that the hospital had called Aitkin County because of the seriousness of the "domestic incident" that had happened early last week. Hammond had been monitored for more than a day, according to hospital officials. The warrant seeking Hammond's arrest was quashed Monday. Sandberg was shot when Hammond got out of his bed about 5:15 a.m. Sunday and initiated a struggle, took Sandberg's gun, and shot him, according to the BCA.  AITKIN - The man who shot an Aitkin County sheriff's deputy Sunday at St. Cloud Hospital and then died afterward was facing seven felonies and had a warrant out for his arrest at the time.Danny Leroy Hammond, 50, was charged Oct. 12 in Aitkin County with kidnapping, second-degree assault, being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition and domestic assault. Court records show that his wife had told him within the last two weeks that she no longer loved him and she wanted to end their marriage of 12 years.
