Update 11:15 a.m.: Suspect apprehended in Norman County deputy shooting near Perley
PERLEY, Minn. – A suspect has been apprehened in a shooting that wounded a Norman County deputy early Tuesday morning near Perley.
Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist said an arrest took place about 10:40 a.m. not far from where the shooting occurred.
He said the incident began about 8:30 a.m., when a Norman County Deputy made a traffic stop on County Road 39 east of Perley.
At some point during the stop, the deputy and the driver of the car exchanged gunfire and the deputy was wounded, Bergquist said.

The deputy, who is not being named, was taken to a Fargo hospital, according to Bergquist.
The Norman County Sheriff’s Department declined to answer questions this morning, stating authorities there were busy dealing with the situation.
Perley is located just east of the Red River and roughly 23 miles north of Moorhead on Highway 75.
A number of facilities in Norman County went into full lockdown until the situation was resolved.
That includes the Benedictine Living Community in Ada and the nearby Bridges Medical Center, according to Tyler Huemberg, administrator and CEO at Benedictine Living Community.
Huemberg said the facilities were put in lockdown, meaning that no one was allowed to enter or leave buildings except for employees and only when necessary.
Those lockdowns, and one at Norman County West Elementary School, were lifted after word of the arrest spread.

Update 10:30 a.m.: Authorities searching for person who shot deputy in Norman County
PERLEY, Minn. – A Norman County sheriff's deputy was shot and wounded this morning near Perley and authorities are searching for the shooter.
Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist said his department has been called in to help in the search.
Bergquist said about 8:30 a.m., a Norman County deputy made a traffic stop on County Road 39 east of Perley.
At some point during the stop, the deputy and the driver of the car exchanged gunfire and the deputy was wounded.
The deputy, who is not being named, was taken to a Fargo hospital, according to Bergquist, who said authorities believe they may know the identity of the shooter and the type of vehicle involved but that information is not being released at this time.

That includes the Benedictine Living Community in Ada and the nearby Bridges Medical Center, according to Tyler Huemberg, administrator and CEO at Benedictine, an assisted living and nursing facility.
Huemberg said all of the doors at the living community have been locked and they are being checked on regularly. Huemberg said the situation will stay that way until further notice.
