Update 4 p.m.

A winter storm warning has been issued for portions of west central, central and central Minnesota from late this afternoon into Thursday.

A low pressure system will move from the Dakotas across southern Minnesota tonight into early Thursday, and bring accumulating snowfall to much of the area.

Snowfall totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected in the warning area, with the greatest amounts expected to run from near Alexandria and Morris southeast through Willmar, Litchfield and Hutchinson to St. Peter and Waseca, the National Weather Service said.

The winter storm warnings area includes Stevens, Pope, Stearns, Swift, Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Renville, Meeker and McLeod counties.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for locations to the southwest and northeast of the warning area, include the remainder of west central, central and south central Minnesota. Snowfall totals from 2 to 6 inches are expected in the advisory area.

A long duration of light to moderate snow is expected over the region from this afternoon into Thursday morning, with the primary snowfall expected from 7 p.m. tonight through 7 a.m. Thursday.

There remains some uncertainty as to exactly where the heaviest snow will occur and it is possible that the axis could shift slightly to the northeast or southwest.
