The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office said John Conrad Tebben, 86, of Clara City died after the mini-van he was driving and a train collided Sunday evening. The crash occurred near the junction of state Highway 23 and 70th Street Southwest, approximately two miles northeast of Maynard.
The sheriff's office said Tebben and his wife, Jennie Poppen Tebben, 79, were transported to the Granite Falls Hospital where John later died. His wife was airlifted from the Granite Falls Hospital, but the destination was not reported. No one on the train was hurt.
The sheriff's office was notified of the crash at 6:53 p.m. Also responding to the crash were the Maynard Fire Department, EMS, Clara City Ambulance, the State Patrol and the Clara City Police Department.
