PLYMOUTH -- Vern Frank Olson, 81, of Plymouth, formerly of Clara City and Spicer, died Sunday.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Saint Barnabas Lutheran Church in Plymouth.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with the Cremation Society of Minnesota in Brooklyn Park.

He was born July 23, 1924, to Frank and Elvera Olson. He grew up in rural South Haven, graduated from Annandale High School in 1942, and then attended the College of Agriculture at the University of Minnesota. He was admitted to the V-12 officer training program of the U.S. Navy. He received training and education at Cornell University and Purdue University and graduated in time to be a diesel engineer and ensign aboard a Navy landing ship at the end of World War II.

He married Shirley Trovatten on July 26, 1946. He taught "Veterans in Agriculture" for one year. He entered the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 1947 and graduated in 1951. He owned and operated a veterinary practice in Litchfield for three years. He practiced veterinary medicine in Clara City from 1954 to 1988. He retired and they moved to Spicer. He moved to Plymouth in 2002.

He is survived by his children: Kristine (and Hy) Grossman of Lambertville, N.J., Kirk (and Jane) of Long Prairie, Lee (and Betty) of Plymouth; six grandchildren; and siblings: Lloyd Olson, Doris Ashwill, Mavis Yerks and Marlis Maurer.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2001; and one sister.
