WILLMAR -- The state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will speak Friday at VFW Post 1639 in Willmar.

Stan Kowalski, known to some as "Killer" Kowalski from his professional wrestling days, will be at the local post's event starting at 6 p.m. Friday. Kowalski is a World War II Navy veteran.

As state commander, Kowalski especially focuses on helping homeless veterans.

According to Les Kaenel, local VFW commander, the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans is one of Kowalski's favorite charities. The council is a nonprofit organization that has been assisting veterans for more than 17 years, helping more than 4,000 veterans and their families, according to its Web site.

Kowalski also has made support of Operation Uplink a priority. This VFW program connects active-duty troops and hospitalized veterans with their loved ones. The program uses contributions from supporters to purchase phone time for the men and women who are serving or have served, as well as hospitalized veterans.
