MONTEVIDEO -- Viola Evelyn Norby, 89, of Montevideo died Monday at Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday afternoon and evening at Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.

She was born Aug. 12, 1917, in Swenoda Township, Swift County, to Edwin and Emilie (Gilsrud) Evenson. She attended rural school in Swenoda Township.

She married Melvin Norby on Nov. 17, 1942, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Benson. They lived in Montevideo where she worked as a waitress for 41 years at Belle's, Tise's and the Mall Café. She also worked at The Hutch for a short time. She moved to Luther Haven Nursing Home in 2004.

She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo and active in women's groups. She was also a member of the VFW and American Legion auxiliaries.

She is survived by her husband; and her siblings: Amy Stay, Verna Myhre, both of Montevideo, Violet Jerve of Plymouth, LaVina Evenson of Minnetonka, Mardell (and Keith) Kennedy of Bloomington, Raynold (and Carol) Evenson of Montevideo, and Dean (and Shirley) Evenson of Benson.

She was preceded in death by four brothers.
