June 5, 1915 - April 8, 2006

RENVILLE -- Violet Delight Licklider, 90, of Renville died Saturday at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Renville. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Renville.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Renville and for one hour prior to the service at the church.

She was born June 5, 1915, in Crooks Township, Renville County, to Arthur and Esther (Peterson) Peterson. Her mother died when she was 2, and she and a younger brother were raised by their stepmother, Mabel (Larson) Peterson. She attended school two years in Renville, then through the eighth grade attended District 75 in Crooks Township, and graduated from Renville Public High School in 1933. She worked at the Renville County Courthouse in Olivia until 1943.

She married Uriah Thomas "Tom" Licklider on June 30, 1940, in Renville. They lived in Olivia. They purchased the Renville newspaper in 1948 and moved to Renville in 1949. They published the Renville Star-Farmer for 33 years and retired in 1981.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, was a Luther League leader and was a member of the Dorcas Society. She volunteered for many community organizations, including the Renville United Appeal for 25 years, Red Cross bloodmobile, Renville Women's Civic Club, RenVilla Nursing Home, and the Renville Girl Scouts.

She is survived by her husband; children: Delight (and Dale) Byrd of Omaha, Neb., Tom Licklider Jr. of North St. Paul (and special friend Nancy Besse of New Ulm), Jane Licklider of Seward, Neb., Daniel (and Sandra) Licklider of Renville; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother: Harold (and Doris) Peterson of Danube.

She was preceded in death by one grandson, two brothers and one sister.
