Several hundred volunteers - of all ages - labored on 12 production lines from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Community Center in Atwater with the goal of packaging 60,000 nutritious meals for disadvantage children as part of Food for Kidz, a nonprofit organization based in Stewart. The 13.8-ounce packages of fortified rice, soy, dried vegetables and seasoning might end up in a refugee camp or in a food shelf in Meeker or Kandiyohi County, according to site coordinator David Johnson. This is the 12th year that the community of Atwater has participated in Food for Kidz. A year ago, 56,000 packages were boxed and shipped from the downtown site.
