Voters overwhelmingly defeat Benson School bond issue

BENSON -- Voters in the Benson School District overwhelmingly defeated an $18.7 million bond in a referendum today with twice as many people voting against the proposal compared to those that voted for it.

BENSON - Voters in the Benson School District overwhelmingly defeated an $18.7 million bond in a referendum today with twice as many people voting against the proposal compared to those that voted for it.

In unofficial results this evening there were 1,354 no votes and 651 yes votes.

Superintendent Dennis Laumeyer said that after two years of developing the remodeling and construction project, the vote results were disappointing.

But Laumeyer thanked the district’s voters for coming out in near-record numbers for a school election to give their opinions.

“I’m very thankful for all the voters that came out,” he said. “It was really good to see that voters came out and expressed their voice.”

The school board had proposed a combination of demolition, new construction and remodeling to replace and improve some of the district’s aging facilities.

Laumeyer said the board will meet on Monday to review the election results and decide the next course of action.
