Wahl's hat trick triggers Willmar to first win, 7-3

WILLMAR - Senior center Tyler Wahl notched a hat trick and the Willmar Cardinals exploded for five goals in the third period to rout Wadena-Deer Creek 7-3 on Saturday evening in a match-up of Section 4A rivals.

Wahl scored twice in the first period, playing on a new line with Danny Swanson, who had a goal and an assist, and Jordan Gauer.

He got his third goal unassisted at 9:42 of the third period.

Andy Boersma, Eric Bangen and Joel Schendel also scored for Willmar (1-3), which had scored only five goals in three losses to start the season.

Wadena-Deer Creek (4-2) scored all its goals on power plays.

Willmar goalie Jon Mattison made 19 saves. The Wolverines were withoutfirst-string goalie, Derek Neu, who is injured.
