GREAT FALLS, MONT. -- Walter Ernest Hinz, 89, of Great Falls, Mont., formerly of Willmar, died Jan. 11 at his home in Great Falls.

There will be no service. Burial will be at Lidgerwood, N.D. Memorials preferred to Walter and Lennea Hinz Memorial Scholarship Fund in Great Falls, Mont.

He was born Sept. 6, 1916, in Lidgerwood, N.D., to John and Alice (Movius) Hinz. He attended school in Lidgerwood and graduated from high school in 1933. He attended North Dakota Agricultural College. He entered the University of North Dakota Medical School in 1938, in Grand Forks, N.D. He graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago in 1942.

He married Lennea Frisk on March 28, 1942, in Chicago. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and was deployed as a medical officer. He served in the European Theater and Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II.

After the war, they lived in Bird Island and he worked as the sole physician. They moved to Willmar in 1950. He practiced general and obstretric medicine until he retired in 1981. They moved to Great Falls, Mont., in 1995. Lennea died in 2001.

He is survived by his children: Jeff (and Sandy) Hinz of Great Falls, Mont., Tom (and Candy) Hinz of Bozeman, Mont., Barbara (and Jim) Quale of Littleton, Colo.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and special friend: Cindy Eve of Great Falls, Mont.

He was preceded in death by his wife; one brother and one sister.
