FERGUS FALLS -- Fergus Falls ended Willmar's seven-match winning streak in a big way Tuesday, thumping the Cardinals 7-1 in a Central Lakes Conference boys soccer match.
The Cardinals' winning streak -- longest in the program's history -- was built on defense. Except for the 5-2 loss to Mankato East Aug. 27, no team had scored more than one goal on keeper Danny King.
But the Otters peppered the Willmar cage with 26 shots. The Cardinals had only six shots on net.
Three minutes into the second half and six seconds after Fergus went up 3-0, Josh Aslesen beat Fergus goalie Justin Dathe from 20 yards on a high shot. But Fergus retaliated in the 44th minute for a 4-1 lead.
"Fergus played really good soccer," said assistant Willmar coach Matt Williams. "It was our worst game, but we'll bounce back."

Since the teams meet only this time, the win counted double points for the Spartans.
