MOORHEAD -- The Willmar boys cross country team got back to its winning ways Monday, capturing the Battle at the Border Invitational in its season-opening meet.
The two-time defending Class AA champions posted 42 points and had all five runners finish in the top 15. Junior Mahad Hassan won the individual title in a time of 16:23.15. Senior Andrew Nicklawsky was third in 16:57.90, senior David Anderson took 11th in 18:11.30, sophomore Abshir Ahmed was 12th in 18:16.15 and senior Zach Coquyt took 15th at 18:25.35. Moorhead was second with 47 points.
The Willmar girls finished a strong fourth with 92 points to Moorhead's 42. The Cardinals' top five runners placed in the top 25, led by Vanessa Engleman, a senior, who finished the course in 16:52.69. Jackie Johnson was 15th in 17:04.19.
