The girls' squad won the Central Lakes Conference meet on their home track and repeated the performance at the Section 2AA championships. The boys took third at both conference (tying with Alexandria) and again at the section meet. Both the boys and the girls 800 relay teams placed seventh at the state meet. Individually, sophomore Brianna Fernholz was sixth as a freshman in the 200 dash. Fernholz is the reigning Central Lakes champion in the 200 and 400 dashes, while senior Dana Guetter won the 800 run. Paul Kimpling, a senior, won the CLC 110 high hurdles last year.

Outlook

A year ago, under new coach Jerry Popp, the Cardinals broke five school records. Forty performances ranked in the program's all-time top 10. The initial sign-up and organizational meeting drew 130 names with around 100 of them first- or second-year prospects in the sport. With the boys Class AA cross-country title serving as a springboard, the boys distance runners should be as good and deep as any in the state. The boys should also be strong in sprints and do well in jumps and hurdles, but vault and throws look like weak spots again.

The girls team won Central Lakes Conference and Section 2AA titles, the latter by a half-point over Mankato East. But the returning team has somewhat less experience than the boys side and the largest numbers are in the sophomore and freshmen classes. The team will be mostly youth in both long runs and the 3200 relay. With so many novices on the team, earning points in technique events like hurdles, the throws and pole vault may come slowly. Popp feels the girls team may be a year away from achieving its full potential. There's good speed for the shorter relays.
