Willmar City Council's Alvarado registers campaign for Minnesota Senate

Fernando Alvarado has registered a campaign committee to run for Minnesota Senate in District 17 as a Democrat, for Minnesota Senate with the Minnesota Secretary of State's office. The Senate District 17 seat is currently held by Sen. Andrew Lang, R-Olivia.

WILLMAR — Willmar City Councilor Fernando Alvarado has registered a committee to run as a Democratic-Farmer-Labor candidate for Minnesota Senate in District 17.

Alvarado is serving his first term on the City Council, which will expire at the end of 2020. He represents the city’s Ward 3 and was elected in 2016.

The Senate District 17 seat is currently held by Sen. Andrew Lang, R-Olivia. He has held the seat since he was elected in 2016.

Alvarado did not return messages left for him Friday.

The campaign paperwork for Alvarado for MN was first filed with the Minnesota Secretary of State's office April 17. An agreement for public subsidy for the campaign was filed Wednesday.

Filing for office for legislative seats opens May 19.

Anita C. Flowe of Willmar is listed as the campaign chair and treasurer of Alvarado’s campaign committee.

In 42 years in the newspaper industry, Linda Vanderwerf has worked at several daily newspapers in Minnesota, including the Mesabi Daily News, now called the Mesabi Tribune in Virginia. Previously, she worked for the Las Cruces Sun-News in New Mexico and the Rapid City Journal in the Black Hills of South Dakota. She has been a reporter at the West Central Tribune for nearly 27 years.
