Willmar clips Marshall in nine innings to capture tourney title

MARSHALL - Willmar scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning, then held off Marshall en route to a 4-3 victory in the championship of the Marshall Invite Saturday.

MARSHALL - Willmar scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning, then held off Marshall en route to a 4-3 victory in the championship of the Marshall Invite Saturday.

The win avenged a season-opening 1-0 loss to Marshall on April 7.

Willmar routed West Fargo (N.D.) 9-2 in the opener of the four-team tournament.

Lac qui Parle Valley lost to Marshall 8-5 in the semifinals before drubbing West Fargo 10-2 for third place.

Troy Ditterich tossed five innings for the win, allowing four hits and one earned run. George Jacobson and Jeremy Elkjer pitched a scoreless inning of relief each.

Josh Dahlke and Tom Prunty had two hits each for the Cardinals. Prunty also drove in three runs.

Marshall rallied from a 5-2 deficit, scoring four times in the fourth and twice in the fifth.

Kyle Mathiowetz pitched 41/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win. He walked four and struck out four.

Eddie Massee and Evan Kraft had two hits apiece for Lac qui Parle Valley. Ryan Sigdahl drove in two runs.

The Eagles plated nine runs over the first two innings and finished with 11 hits.

Evan Kraft, Butch Hendrickson and Tony Ludvigson had two hits each for the Eagles.

Brock Kanstrup worked the first six innings for the win. He was touched for seven hits and two runs, while walking one and striking out six. Hendrickson worked a hitless inning of relief with two strikeouts.

Tied 2-2 in the top of the ninth, Willmar's eventual winning rally began when Kyle Townswick led off with a single to right field and moved to second on an error. George Jacobson then sacrificed and an error scored Townswick for a 3-2 lead. With one out, Kyle Birkland singled and stole second before Tyler Horning drove him in with a single.

Marshall got a run in the last of the ninth and had runners on second and third with one out before winning pitcher Matt Roisum escaped further damage with a popout and a groundout.
