OWATONNA -- Willmar trailed by only one after the first period, but North Wright County erupted for four goals in the second period before going on to blank the Cardinals 7-0 in the opening round of the Owatonna Invite Tuesday.

North Wright County, made up from the Annandale, Monticello and St. Michael-Albertville school districts, outshot the Cardinals 36-12.

"We were missing two of our first-line players, but they beat us to the loose pucks in the second period," said Willmar coach Ross Dahl.

Freshman wing Chelsey Wierschem (illness) and junior center Chelsey Bielhartz (family vacation) were out for the Cardinals, who fell to 1-10.

Willmar faces off against Hutchinson at 6 p.m. today in the second round of the round-robin tournament.
