Willmar falls to Icebreakers

WILLMAR -- Five different players for the St. Cloud Icebreakers, who tripped up Willmar 5-1 in a Central Lakes Conference girls hockey match at the Civic Center Thursday.

The St. Cloud Apollo/Cathedral sports pairing outshot Willmar 32-17, including 13-5 in the last period.

That's when Willmar got its only marker. Chelsey Wiershem scored a powerplay goal at 10:00 with assists going to Ashley Hutton and Ali Sing.

In goal for Willmar, Amanda Croonquist rejected 27 shots.

"I thought we played very well," said Willmar coach Rick Dahle. "(St. Cloud) is a very good team. We worked hard and never gave up. If we would have had a few lucky bounces early, we would have been right there."

Lindsey Johnson and Emily Reugemer scored in the first period for a 2-0 Icebreaker lead. Goals by Anne Schleper and Kelsey Lucia made it 4-0 after two.

St. Cloud Icebreakers goalie Jenna Traut stopped all 13 shots she faced before giving way to backup Dayton Hilgert.

After a 2-0 start, the Cardinals have lost two straight.

Willmar plays at Sartell/Sauk Rapids Tuesday night in another Central Lakes Conference game.
