WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals amassed 13 runs on 14 hits but still fell short of victory on Tuesday. Sartell scored a run in the top of the eighth on David Deminsky's bases-loaded sacrifice fly, then the Sabres' left-hander set down Willmar 1-2-3 to end a wild Central Lakes game 14-13.
The Cardinals, who saw a four-game win streak snapped, had bounced back from a 10-3 deficit but could never get a lead in the 2½-hour game. Each team used four pitchers and none escaped without some damage.
Sartell scored five in the third to drive Willmar starter Matt Roisum off the hill. The Sabres (5-1, 6-1) added two more in the fifth off Alex Lotthammer for a 10-3 spread. Then it was Willmar's turn, scoring nine runs over the next three innings to pull within 13-12.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Cardinals loaded the bases with one out on a walk and singles by Tyler Horning and Tom Seedorf. Ross Van Hauen put down a perfect bunt to squeeze Kyle Townswick home from third for a 13-all tie.
Sartell went back in front with an unearned run off losing pitcher Jason Brower in the top of the eighth. For the first time Willmar had no answer as Deminsky fanned two around a ground out. Matt Seehusen went 3-for-5 and George Jacobson, Tom Seedorf and Van Hauen added two hits apiece. Townswick scored four runs.
