DULUTH -- Willmar came from behind three times over the weekend and finished ninth out of 32 teams at the Duluth Invitational.

Willmar went 4-2 overall in the tournament to improve to 13-6 on the season.

Willmar split a pair of pool-play games on Friday, then was routed 9-0 by Duluth Lakeview on Saturday morning. But Willmar came back to win its next three games after trailing in each, including a 5-2 victory over Perham in the consolation championship on Sunday.

"I'm pleased with the way the team kept coming back," said Willmar coach Dave Oehrlein. "After we lost bad to Duluth Lakeview on Saturday morning, we talked about a few things and they really started hitting the ball better. We had some big innings where we strung a bunch of hits together. We weren't doing that before."

Willmar beat Centennial 5-4 after trailing 4-0, then knocked off Hermantown 9-6 after trailing 4-3 to advance to the consolation championship.

Willmar plays at Bird Island tonight, its seventh game in four days.

Kyle Townswick had an outstanding tournament at the plate for Willmar, collecting 11 hits in the six games.
