Willmar Legion wins Albany Invite

ST. MARTIN -- George Jacobson and Jordan Smith combined on a four-hitter and Willmar edged Little Falls 3-1 in the championship of the four-team Albany Invite.

Willmar blanked Dassel-Cokato 2-0 in the first game behind Alex Malmgren's two-hitter.

Willmar will play Tri-Town Tuesday at Atwater in its next game. That game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Willmar scored both of its runs in the third inning off Jake Hendricks. With one out, Mike Dunham and Logan Birkland hit consecutive singles and Jordan Smith followed with a run-scoring single. After Birkland was forced out, Smith eventually scored on a pickoff attempt.


Malmgren walked three and struck out seven in going the distance. Birkland and Smith had two hits apiece.

Logan Birkland had two hits for Post 169.


Jacobson hurled the first six innings for the win, allowing four hits and one unearned run, while walking three and striking out two. Smith pitched a perfect seventh inning for the save, striking out two of three batters he faced.

Morris Invite

BOLD went 1-3 at the three-day Morris Legion Invitational, losing 4-2 on Sunday to Cross Lake in the seventh-place game.

In two games on Saturday, BOLD scored a total of 25 runs, but lost both. Eagan beat BOLD 15-14 and Hawley beat BOLD 22-11.


Shawn Dollerschell homered twice and drove in eight runs in the three games. Kyle Seehusen and Alex Gay also homered. Gay's was a grand slam.

On Friday, BOLD scored four runs in the top of the 10th to edge Morris, 10-8.

Paynesville trailed 11-10 with two outs and none on in the bottom of the seventh. But consecutive walks brought up No. 3 hitter Shane Kampsen, who belted a walk-off three-run homer. He finished with six RBI. Colin Spooner had three hits and drove in three runs.

Paynesville pitcher Brett Savelkoul went the distance, weathering 19 hits and two walks, while striking out 10 for the win. He also had three hits and scored five times.

For Tri-Town, Jeff Peterson went 5-for-5 and Travis Frederiksen was 4-for-4. Jordan Tanner and Vance Martin had three hits apiece.
