Willmar man held on $250,000 bail

WILLMAR - Abass Warsame Mumin, 23, of Willmar, made his first court appearance Friday on a total of seven felony charges stemming from an incident Monday that involved the alleged attempted sexual assault of a woman.
Unconditional bail was set at $250,000.
Mumin’s next appearance is Nov. 4 in Kandiyohi County District Court.
He faces felony charges of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, domestic assault and domestic assault by strangulation, terroristic threats, motor vehicle theft, receiving stolen property and fifth-degree drug possession. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of domestic assault.
According to the complaint, the Willmar Police investigation began when officers were called around 9:30 p.m. Monday to the Burger King restaurant on East Highway 12 on a report of a stolen minivan.
At the restaurant, a woman reported to officers that Mumin had attacked her, took her vehicle and she’d last seen him driving west on the highway. She had jumped out of the vehicle and was not fully clothed. A man at the restaurant had given her his cell phone to call for help and had found clothing for her.
The woman said she’d picked Mumin up earlier in the evening and drove with him in town before they drove to a location between Willmar and Spicer where they parked the minivan. She said Mumin told her he wanted a relationship with her. When she told him that such a relationship would not work, he responded by saying he was going to kill her and then himself.
She reported that Mumin told her to take her clothing off and then ripped her clothing when she refused to disrobe. She said he then attempted to have sexual contact with her and that she kicked and fought back before attempting to flee from him and the vehicle.
Mumin then made the woman drive back into Willmar, where she jumped out of the minivan and ran toward the Burger King.
The woman also reported Mumin had attempted to choke her during the incident.
She was taken to Rice Memorial Hospital for observation.
On Wednesday, officers located the minivan, Mumin and another man at the intersection of Fifth Street and Benson Avenue Southwest. Both men attempted to walk away from the officers, but were taken into custody.
When he was questioned by police, Mumin said the van belonged to his girlfriend and that she’d reported it stolen because she was mad he’d cheated on her.
He claimed the woman left him with the vehicle and walked away.
When he was searched, officers found a bag in his pocket containing a white powder and crystal-type substance that tested positive for cocaine and methamphetamine. The substance weighed 0.8 grams.
Mumin has prior convictions for assault in Kandiyohi County and in Morgan County, Colo., two years ago.
