WILLMAR -- A 26-year-old Willmar man is being held in the Kandiyohi County Jail for a number of charges after string of criminal events Wednesday evening. The charges include theft, criminal damage to property, a hit and run accident, driving while impaired and fleeing an officer on foot.
The man was apprehended by officers around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from Sgt. Jim Felt of the Willmar Police Department. Police are still looking for a second suspect and are continuing to investigate the incidents.
Police received three calls in rapid succession, beginning around 10:35 p.m. Wednesday involving property damage to a vehicle along the 1500 block of Ninth Street Southwest. The second call reported people attempting to break into cars along the 1300 block of 11th Street Southwest and the third call was a report of a hit and run accident near the intersection of Carolina Avenue and 11th Street Southwest.
Officers gathered information and began searching the area. An officer spotted a vehicle matching the description near Regency West and attempted to stop it. The driver stopped the vehicle in a driveway and two suspects ran. The driver was apprehended.
The police have linked the vehicle to the hit and run accident, plus the damage and thefts to at least two other vehicles. Several stolen items were recovered from the vehicle.
