NEW LONDON - The temperature was raw enough for a late-season game of pond hockey, but four teams persevered to complete the New London-Spicer Early Bird Tennis Invitational Saturday.
Willmar opened the season by beating Becker 5-2, Melrose 7-0 and New London-Spicer 6-1.
"I don't think it ever got above 40 (degrees) the whole time," remarked Willmar coach Loren Holter.
In a battle of undefeateds at 1-singles, Willmar's Cass Magnuson tipped the Wildcats' Nick Thompson 6-3, 6-3 during the final team match of the day. Willmar was 12-0 in singles as Marco Vazquez, Matt Hallstrom and Andy Gimse also went 3-0.
New London-Spicer earned all three of its points on tiebreakers in a 4-3 loss to Becker. The Wildcats topped Melrose 7-0.

At 1-doubles for NLS, David Bloomquist paired twice with Colin Wright and once with Brennen Sietsema to go 3-0.
