Willmar police investigate fight, gunshot incident

Willmar Police are investigating an incident involving a fight and a shot fired that happened around 2 a.m. Thursday along the 1300 block of 24th Street Northwest.

Willmar Police are investigating an incident involving a fight and a shot fired that happened around 2 a.m. Thursday along the 1300 block of 24th Street Northwest.

According to a news release from Sgt. Jim Felt, officers arrived to find no people in the area, but located a shell casing and evidence of a struggle. The officers were approached by a 19-year-old Willmar man who said he had been assaulted by several people and struck in the head with a crowbar. The incident happened outside of an apartment after a party.

The man said he had retrieved a gun from his apartment and fired a shot to scare the group of people away. He was transported by private vehicle to Rice Memorial Hospital for treatment of head injuries.

The gun was turned over to the officers by the man and the investigation is ongoing. The Kandiyohi County Sheriff's office assisted the police department in response to the incident.
