Willmar Rails foiled by Milroy

WILLMAR -- The Willmar Rails got enough pitching Sunday afternoon to win but were shaky in the field against a good Milroy team in Cornbelt South amateur baseball.

WILLMAR -- The Willmar Rails got enough pitching Sunday afternoon to win but were shaky in the field against a good Milroy team in Cornbelt South amateur baseball.

Profiting from the steady pitching of Nathan Deutz, the Yankees took a 4-3 victory at Taunton Stadium to improve to 3-0 in league and 4-1 overall.

The Rails will take a 1-2 record to Granite Falls on Friday to play the Kilowatts.

"We've gotten good pitching every game," said Willmar Rails manager Rick Schwantes. "We had a couple of misjudged fly balls in the outfield and an infield error that hurt, but overall I was pleased to play this well against a good Milroy team at this time. It's early."

Because of previous commitments, two starters were gone and only two bench players were available.

Troy Ditterich threw the first seven innings for the Rails. He gave up nine hits, four runs, three earned, walked two and fanned seven.

Willmar reliever Cody Scott set down the last six Yankees in order.

Willmar scored twice in the first inning when Lane Kleist reached on a walk and Matt Sagedahl singled. Both scored without the aid of a hit.

In the seventh inning, Cory Schwantes singled in Sagedahl, who had doubled, but that would be all Deutz would allow.

The Yankees' big inning was the fourth. An error was followed by three straight singles and a fielder's choice to plate two runs for a 4-2 lead.

Eric Dolan singled and doubled and Andy Schmidt hit a triple to lead the Milroy offense.

Deutz finished with a seven-hitter. He walked only one and struck out seven.
