Willmar reaches 6 finals

MINNEAPOLIS -- Willmar's state swimming contingent qualified in all events for the finals at the Class A preliminaries Tuesday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Willmar's state swimming contingent qualified in all events for the finals at the Class A preliminaries Tuesday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Senior Dana Guetter finished second in both of her individual events, the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. She was .02 seconds better than her seed time of 24.56 in the 50 and her 100 time of 53.98 was .27 second behind Meghan Weiss of Visitation.

Eighth-grader Alissa Tinklenberg posted a second-place preliminary finish in the 200 freestyle (1:59.43) and sixth in the 500 freestyle (5:23.35).

Both Cardinal relays ad-vanced to the championship final, with the 200-yard freestyle team of Aleasha Blokzyl, Sarah Frank, Guetter and Tinklenberg taking third in 1:41.58.

Their time was almost two seconds faster than their seed time. Montevideo/-YME's team of freshman Melissa Varpness and juniors Ali Rongstad, Maggie Hathaway and Madi Eid were 17th in 1:44.08.

The 200 medley team of Tinklenberg, senior Anita Nelson, Guetter and Blokzyl took fifth in 1:53.99. Montevideo/YME's 200 medley squad of senior Cassy Olson, junior Casey Schulte, senior Amy Johnson and junior Madi Eid finished 14th (1:57.21) Tuesday and will compete in the consolation final.

Litchfield's Maggie Hansvick qualified for the consolation final in the 100-yard breaststroke by taking 10th in 1:11.00, while Montevideo/YME's Eid placed 27th in the 50 freestyle (25.79).
