WILLMAR -- The National Weather Service in Chanhassen has issued a wind advisory for strong northwest winds developing late tonight and continuing into Wednesday afternoon for the Willmar region and much of southwestern Minnesota.

The advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday. The area involved is generally west of a line from Long Prairie to Willmar to New Ulm to Fairmont.

The Weather Service says strong northwest winds between 20 and 30 mph, with gusts to 45 mph, are expected to occur behind an Arctic front anticipated to march through the region by late tonight.

A wind advisory means driving can be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, and lightweight objects outdoors may be strewn about, including small branches.

The counties in the advisory are Brown, Chippewa, Douglas, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Martin, Pope, Redwood, Renville, Stevens, Swift, Watonwan and Yellow Medicine.
