ROCHESTER -- Carl Shuldes, head swim coach at Willmar, is recovering after undergoing surgery for cancer on Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital.

Journal entries on The CaringBridge.org Website said the 2-3 hours surgery went very well and he could return to Willmar as early as Friday afternoon. The determination to have surgery was made on Tuesday by Mayo physicians following three months of hormone therapy with "positive" results, according to a Journal entry by Carl and his wife, Lynn.

Shuldes has been head coach of the boys program since 1996 and of the girls team since 2003.

Assistant coach Steve Stein has taken over the coaching duties in the absence of the head coach. Willmar hosts St. Cloud Apollo at 6 p.m. today.
