ST. PETER -- A year ago, Willmar sent one girl to the state track meet. This time, senior Brianna Fernholz will have plenty of company.

Fernholz won the Section 2AA 200 meter dash on the Gustavus Adolphus track Friday to earn a return trip to the state meet June 6-7 at Hamline University in St. Paul.

She was one of five individual champions for Willmar, which placed second in girls and fifth in the boys team standings.

Junior Shelby Morton won the 100 intermediate hurdles in 16.30 and tied for first in the high jump with a 5-1 clearance, though she lost the gold medal on a tiebreaker. She'll compete in both events at state. Morton, who earned points in four events, was the ninth seed in the 100 hurdles, but cut .75 in her final run.

Chrissy Boros, who was seeded third in the 100 dash, won by .04 with a time of 12.84.

The Willmar girls also showed their speed by winning both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays (relay names were not available).

The Cardinal boys team showed strength in the distance runs where Andrew Nicklawsky won the 1,600 in 4:29.3 and Mahad Hassan took the 3,200 run in 9:35.75.

There was disappointment, too. Willmar's 4x800 boys relay ran a season-best 8:00.46 and finished second behind Buffalo (7:53.82). The Cardinal quartet fell 2.82 seconds short of the 2008 state standard of 7:57.62.

Other close calls that fell short included Sarah Erickson third in the discus and Jordan Shalmo third in the 300 intermediate hurdles despite a career-best 40.21.

Senior Jackson Roberts had career-best efforts in both the discus and hot put and finished fourth in each.

Fernholz was seeded at 25.76 but went 25.12 to win by .80. Last year she was second in the 200 in 26.04. The Willmar girls also tied for second last year.

New Prague won the first-place trophies in both divisions.
