Willmar won't let go of crown

WILLMAR -- Despite having a target on its back, Willmar never lost a game in any of its four matches Saturday en route to winning the Willmar Invitational for the second straight year and the fourth time in the last five years.

WILLMAR -- Despite having a target on its back, Willmar never lost a game in any of its four matches Saturday en route to winning the Willmar Invitational for the second straight year and the fourth time in the last five years.

"I thought we played pretty well," said Willmar coach Mary Hanson. "We run a very fast offense and, fortunately, we were able to run it most of the day. And I thought we served pretty well, too."

Willmar topped Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, Benson and Parkers Prairie in pool play to advance to the championship match against BBE (20-2), which entered the final match with a 19-match winning streak.

"I was worried about BBE, to be honest," said Hanson. "They have a lot of offense, especially for a small school."

Willmar has now won nine straight matches.

"We have a lot of offensive options," said BBE coach Mimi Knutson, whose team also lost to Willmar in last year's final, "but to beat Willmar you have to have all your offense working and we didn't always have that."

Willmar senior middle hitter Mary Sussenguth had 41 kills in the tournament, including 18 in the championship match. She also had nine ace serves and five ace blocks.

Sophomore Greta King added 19 kills, senior Laura Nielsen 12 and senior Nina Emery 11. Senior setter Kelsey Hanson chalked up 73 assists and added seven ace serves and 20 digs. Senior Chelsea Vreeman, one of the area's hardest hitters, was relegated to the back row with a sore knee. Vreeman, wearing a knee brace, led the Cardinals with 11 ace serves and matched sophomore libero Megan Brown with 27 digs.

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa reached the championship after beating New London-Spicer, Montevideo and Buffalo Lake-Hector in pool play. The Jaguars were stretched to the limit against Buffalo Lake-Hector as BBE senior April Hansen and BLH senior Leah Ashburn matched kills in what had the appearance of a shootout. BBE prevailed 22-25, 28-26, 18-16 with Hansen pounding the floorboards for the final kill of the match.

Ashburn, the area's all-time kill leader, led all attackers in th etournament with 42 kills. Hansen and teammate Ashley Lensing had 36 kills apiece.

BLH finished third with a 25-22, 25-19 win over Parkers Prairie, the latter who was appearing in the tournament for the first time after replacing BOLD, which elected to host its own tournament on the same date.

Benson topped New London-Spicer for fifth place and Montevideo beat Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City for seventh.
