ST. CLOUD -- St. Cloud State freshman Jordan Smith, an outfielder from Willmar, was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's Freshman of the Year.
Smith, who was also named to the all-NSIC first team and won a conference gold glove award, was third in NSIC games in slugging percentage at .829 and fifth in total bases with 97. He scored 41 runs (sixth), had a .511 on-base percentage (seventh) and 13 doubles (seventh). He had 51 hits (tied for eighth) and 40 RBI (tied for eighth) and batted .436 (10th). Smith was named the conference's player of the week twice.
He leads the Huskies in overall batting average (.453), hits (81), home runs (11) and RBI (64).
St. Cloud State will face Southwest Minnesota State in the NSIC Tournament at 3:30 p.m. today in St. Cloud. The Huskies are 1-1 in the tournament, which started Thursday.
It was announced last week that Smith will play for the hometown Willmar Stingers this summer in Northwoods League summer wooden bat baseball. The Stingers start their inaugural season June 3 at Taunton Stadium in Willmar.
