ST. PAUL - A woman who says a priest assaulted her in Bemidji about 45 years ago has sued the Crookston Catholic diocese.
Linda Carroll said on Wednesday that the Rev. James Porter assaulted her at St. Philip’s school in Bemidji when she was in second grade.
Her lawsuit says the diocese created a public nuisance by allowing Porter to remain a priest, a claim that the diocese said is “ill suited” in the situation.
Carroll is represented by St. Paul attorney Jeff Anderson.
Anderson said that Porter had been treated for sex abuse, including for a time in Bemidji. His case attracted national attention after sex abuse accusations came in several states.
Porter left the priesthood in 1974 and died of cancer in 2005 at the age of 70. He had admitted to molesting more than 100 children.
