ST. CLOUD -- A 43-year-old St. Cloud man was booked into the Stearns County Jail, and a 23-year-old man was treated for injuries sustained when he was assaulted with a rake Monday afternoon on the roof of the county jail building in downtown St. Cloud.

According to a news release from Sheriff John Sanner, law enforcement was notified around 3:15 p.m. that there was a fight on the roof of the jail, which is currently being re-roofed by Horizon Roofing.

Responding officers found the victim, with a 3- to 4-inch cut on his forehead and a missing tooth, and the assailant, Warren Smith. The investigation concluded that Smith and the victim were temporary workers hired from an employment agency but not employees of the roofing company. The men had a verbal altercation that turned into a physical altercation. Smith hit the man in the face with a rake that was supposed to be used to spread rocks on the roof.

Smith faces a second-degree assault charge.

Also responding were the St. Cloud Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance. The victim was provided medical care but refused further treatment.
