MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A big milestone for Xcel Energy.

The Minneapolis-based utility says it will achieve 1,000 megawatts of wind power capacity on its Minnesota system this month.

That will move Minnesota into third place nationally in wind power production -- behind Texas and California -- according to the American Wind Energy Association.

Xcel Energy says it will reach the renewable energy milestone by the end of the year, when PPM Energys MinnDakota Wind Power project goes online. The 150-megawatt development is located on the Minnesota-South Dakota border.

Xcel Energy chairman, president and CEO Dick Kelly says 1,000 megawatts of wind can provide enough electricity to power 270,000 homes.
