GRANITE FALLS -- Yellow Medicine County will employ its own full-time administrator to succeed John Chattin.

The Yellow Medicine County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to retain the Brimeyer Group to recruit a full-time county administrator. The motion to retain the firm was approved with only member Ron Antony casting a "no" vote, according to draft minutes of the meeting.

The county has been sharing the services of County Administrator John Chattin with Swift County since October 2003. Chattin recently resigned his position with the two counties to become the city administrator of Bemidji. Chattin has urged both counties to consider employing their own full-time administrators.

Before deciding to seek their own administrator, the Yellow Medicine County commissioners discussed a variety of options. Chattin reported that they considered whether to have a coordinator or administrator, and whether it should be a part-time or full-time position. They also discussed the possibility of an administrator taking on some economic development duties for the county as well.

The commissioners intend to meet with a representative of the Brimeyer Group at their next meeting and discuss the search for an administrator. The process to seek and employ an administrator usually requires 60 to 90 days at a minimum, Chattin said.

His last day of service with Yellow Medicine County will be Nov. 2.

The commissioners also approved a motion to have Auditor/Treasurer Carolyn Sherlin assume the administrator's duties until a new administrator is employed.
