YME clips Paynesville

GRANITE FALLS -- Yellow Medicine East had a short field quite often and took full advantage of it in a 32-22 win over Paynesville in West Central South conference football action Friday.

While neither team was immune from turnovers, Paynesville (0-1, 1-1) turned the ball over seven times in the game, including six fumbles.

But it was YME's miscues that made it close in the second and third quarters.

Paynesville turned one Sting turnover into a touchdown on an interception return by Jared Eickhoff to cut YME's lead to 19-14.

The Bulldogs blocked a YME punt on the first possesion of the second half and scored on a Kevin Klein four-yard run. The two-point conversion gave Paynesville a 22-19 lead, but YME answered with a Phil Johnson one-yard touchdown run, his second of the game, before the end of the third quarter.

The big play came at the start of the fourth quarter, when Paynesville marched down the field and made it to the six-yard line, only to fumble the ball away.
