GRANITE FALLS -- The Yellow Medicine East School Board on Monday night accepted a letter of resignation from Darlene Hanson from her position as secretary at Bert Raney Elementary School in Granite Falls after serving the district for 38 years.
Her last day on the job will be April 10. Superintendent Dwayne Strand said Hanson submitted her letter now to provide time for the district to post the vacancy and find a replacement.
Hanson began her career at Bert Raney as a playground supervisor and lunchroom supervisor. She will end her career as secretary to the superintendent at the district office while Strand's current secretary is on maternity leave.
"She's really done a whole gamut of positions for the district over time. She's done a lot with technology and filled in lots of roles over the years,'' said Strand.
Also Monday, Strand and board chairman Warren Formo reported on meetings with Renville County West School District about possible ways for the districts and possibly other neighboring districts to work together in the future.

Formo and the YME administrative team met with RCW board members and administrators on Nov. 21. YME and RCW administrators met on Dec. 7, said Strand. He said YME and RCW have shared programs in the past but are not sharing programs this year. The purpose of the talks is to keep those avenues open, said Strand.
"We're all certainly affected by budgets and declining enrollments and how do you still balance good opportunities and electives for kids while you respond to those other issues,'' said Strand.
In other business, the board:
- Received a report on a mediation session with the teachers union. Another meeting with the mediator is set for Jan. 6.
- Held the Truth-in-Taxation hearing. After holding the hearing, the board voted to approve the 2006 levy of $828,516.97, up 5.69 percent from the 2005 levy.
- Accepted the resignation of Barry Weidauer from his position as junior varsity baseball coach.
The school board will meet again Jan. 9.
