SPICER -- Living up to its name, the Spicer WinterFest Frozen 5k fitness run went off in clear, 13-degree below condition on Saturday morning.

A total of 96 mostly-masked runners completed the 3.1-mile out-and-back wintry romp on Lake Avenue South. Jacob Yurek, an accomplished marathoner, won the race in 17:42 with New London native Jeff Miller, now of Dilworth, eight seconds back.

Both those times were under last year's winning time of 17:54, run by 17-year-old Kyle Schmidt of Hutchinson, who did not defend.

Lori Gehrking from Willmar won the women's race in 22:42. Gehrking, who operates a day-care service and has grown children of her own, said the only reason she won is because several other top area runners didn't show up.

Actually, Becky Graves, last year's winner and the 2007 Glacial Lakes Running Series Champion, was on hand but not competing.

"I'm 19 weeks pregnant," explained the mother of two youngsters. "I don't think I'll be doing any running this season."

Gehrking, who was third overall in last year's GLRS, was 1:30 off Graves' time a year ago when a record 233 runners finished the race with the mercury at 13-degrees above.

There were 45 walk-ups before the race meaning about a third of the 85 pre-registered runners decided Saturday's bone-chill made it a "no-go" for them.

Yurek is a 26-year-old Dassel-Cokato graduate who calls Silver Lake home though he now lives in St. Paul and works in Stillwater for Anderson Windows in the engineer-test section.

He's run 25 marathons, including 12 Grandmas, Boston and Chicago. His personal best is a 2:55 last fall at the Twin Cities.
