The Zankel Scholar award for illustration students is named after Arthur Zankel, a New York philanthropist who died in July 2005.

His estate donated more than $120 million to educational, cultural and human service causes. One of those donations was to the Society of Illustrators, which established the Zankel Scholar award for illustration students entering their final year of school.

Zankel had become familiar with the society through the involvement of his wife, Judy Francis Zankel, a former president of the society.

Zankel was a lifelong New Yorker and longtime member of the Citigroup Inc. board of directors.
