WILLMAR — CentraCare announced Tuesday, June 28, that parents and guardians are now able to make appointments for COVID-19 vaccinations for children under 5.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccination series for children ages 6 months to 4 years old on June 18.
According to a news release from CentraCare, the vaccine is one-tenth the dosage given to adults. It is a three-shot regimen: Children would receive two doses three weeks apart, and a third dose at least two months later.
Families have several options for getting children vaccinated:
- Call CentraCare Connect at 320-200-3200 to schedule an appointment at most CentraCare locations.
- Call for appointments at CentraCare — Willmar Clinic at 320-231-5000 , ext. 48600.
- Call for appointments at the CentraCare — New London Clinic at 320-354-2222 .
- Receive the vaccine during a regular primary care clinic visit.
A parent or guardian must provide consent and be present at a child’s immunization appointment.
According to the news release from CentraCare, while children are far less likely than adults to get seriously ill from COVID-19, they still can transmit the disease to others. Also, getting kids vaccinated is an important component of protecting children from serious illness.
