WILLMAR — Confirmed cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in west central Minnesota, but the pace abated somewhat in the most recent report from the Minnesota Department of Health.

The department reported 10 new cases in Kandiyohi County on Thursday. The county had reported 37 new cases one day earlier.

Stearns County reported 42 newly confirmed cases on Thursday, and six probable cases. The state on Wednesday began reporting probable cases based on a different kind of testing.

Most of the other counties in this region reported single-digit increases in confirmed cases. No other counties besides Stearns had any additional probable cases in Thursday's report.

Yellow Medicine County reported seven newly confirmed cases, and Chippewa reported four. Lac qui Parle and Redwood counties each reported three new cases, Renville reported two, while Big Stone, Pope and Swift counties each saw one new case.

Statewide there were 1,108 newly reported confirmed cases on Thursday, and 61 newly reported probable cases.

That brings the state’s cumulative total to 117,106, which includes 116,865 confirmed and 241 probable cases. Of the cumulative number of cases, 12,024 of them are health care workers.

The Minnesota Department of Health as of Wednesday added an additional breakdown to the data that details how many cases are classified as “confirmed” through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing and how many cases are deemed “probable” through antigen testing.

Statewide, there were 19 additional deaths attributed to COVID-19 for a current statewide total of 2,199 That includes 2,192 from confirmed cases and seven from probable cases of COVID.

Most of the deaths in the state, 1,546, have occurred in long-term care or assisted living facilities, and 1,747 of the deaths were 70 years or older.

The Minnesota Department of Health is also reporting that 104,547 of the state's reported positive cases no longer need to self-isolate.

So far in Minnesota, there have been approximately 2,403,811 completed tests, including 2,386,848 PCR tests and 16,963 antigen tests. Approximately 1,623,276 people have been tested since Jan. 20.

The information was included in the latest Minnesota Department of Health daily situation update, released at 11 a.m. daily. The data released are current as of 4 p.m. the day before.

The current number of COVID-19 cases among residents confirmed to reside in area counties includes:

  • Big Stone County: 118

  • Chippewa County: 333, and one probable case

  • Kandiyohi County: 1,387, and one probable case

  • Lac qui Parle County: 115

  • Meeker County: 279

  • Pope County: 131

  • Redwood County: 223

  • Renville County: 213, and three probable cases

  • Stearns County: 4,851, and 37 probable cases

  • Swift County: 178

  • Yellow Medicine County: 256
