MONTEVIDEO — An individual in their early 80s living in Chippewa County was the latest death connected to the COVID-19 pandemic in the local area. The death was reported in Saturday's state report. This was the county's third COVID-19 death.
Positive cases also continue to tick upward in the region. There were 24 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in Kandiyohi County and another 67 in Stearns County.
Chippewa added another seven positive cases to its total, while Meeker had six new positive cases. Redwood and Renville counties each added five confirmed positive cases. Swift and Lac que Parle counties had four new cases, Yellow Medicine and Big Stone had three and Pope had one new case.
Renville County also had three probable positive cases, with Stearns County having one probable case.
Statewide there were 1,704 newly reported confirmed cases and 22 newly reported probable cases.
That brings the state's cumulative total to 121,090, which includes 120,818 confirmed and 272 probable cases.
Of the cumulative number of cases, 12,315 of them are health care workers.
The Minnesota Department of Health as of Wednesday added an additional breakdown to the data that details how many cases are classified as “confirmed” through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing and how many cases are deemed “probable” through antigen testing.
There were 5 additional deaths attributed to COVID-19, for a current total of 2,217 deaths from confirmed cases and 9 from probable cases.
Most of the deaths, 1,560, have occurred in long-term care or assisted living facilities, and 1,766 of the deaths were 70 years or older.
The Minnesota Department of Health is also reporting that 106,774 of the state's reported positive cases no longer need to self-isolate.
So far in Minnesota, there have been approximately 2,477,133 completed tests, including 2,458,271 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and 18,861 antigen tests. And approximately 1,661,351 people have been tested since Jan. 20.
The information was included in the latest Minnesota Department of Health daily situation update, released at 11 a.m. daily. The data released are current as of 4 p.m. the day before.

- Big Stone County: 125
- Chippewa County: 364
- Kandiyohi County: 1,490
- Lac qui Parle County: 121
- Meeker County: 300
- Pope County: 137
- Redwood County: 236
- Renville County: 224
- Stearns County: 5,161
- Swift County: 184
- Yellow Medicine County: 263
