WILLMAR — COVID-19 cases in the area showed an increase on Wednesday, with the 11 counties in this area reporting 67 newly confirmed cases, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

The area experienced two deaths. Chippewa County reported the loss of an individual in the 90-94 age category and Stearns County the loss of an individual in the 85-89 age category.

Stearns County had 37 new confirmed and 11 new probable cases in the daily update. Kandiyohi County had 11 confirmed cases. Meeker County reported five new confirmed cases. Redwood County reported four confirmed cases and one new probable case. Lac qui Parle County reported three new cases. There were two new confirmed cases each in Chippewa, Renville and Swift counties, and Chippewa County reported one new probable case. Pope County reported one new confirmed case. Yellow Medicine County reported no new confirmed cases but added two probable cases. Big Stone County reported no new cases.

Statewide there were 1,290 newly reported confirmed cases and 214 newly reported probable cases. Probable cases are based on antigen testing. Confirmed cases are based on polymerase chain reaction tests.

That brings the state's cumulative total to 440,354, which includes 423,229 confirmed and 17,125 probable cases.

Of the cumulative number of cases, 34,275 of them are health care workers.

There were 50 additional deaths attributed to COVID-19, for a current total of 5,567 deaths from confirmed cases and 207 from probable cases.

Of the deaths, 3,693 have occurred in long-term care or assisted living facilities, and 4,790 of the deaths were 70 years or older.

The information was included in the latest Minnesota Department of Health daily situation update, released at 11 a.m. daily. The data released are current as of 4 p.m. the day before.

Since the start of the pandemic, the number of COVID-19 cases among residents confirmed to reside in area counties and the number of deaths includes:

  • Big Stone County: 442 confirmed, 9 probable; 3 deaths
  • Chippewa County: 1,270 confirmed, 36 probable; 32 deaths
  • Kandiyohi County: 5,449 confirmed, 51 probable; 69 deaths
  • Lac qui Parle County: 597 confirmed, 54 probable; 16 deaths
  • Meeker County: 1,943 confirmed, 29 probable; 33 deaths
  • Pope County: 725 confirmed, 8 probable; 5 deaths
  • Redwood County: 1,340 confirmed, 32 probable; 27 deaths
  • Renville County: 1,305 confirmed, 51 probable; 39 deaths
  • Stearns County: 17,066 confirmed, 582 probable; 180 deaths
  • Swift County: 801 confirmed, 22 probable; 17 deaths
  • Yellow Medicine County: 856 confirmed, 67 probable; 14 deaths

The state is now also reporting daily vaccine administration numbers. The vaccine is not yet available to the general public. Health care workers and long-term care facility residents are the priority populations currently.

As of Wednesday’s report, 146,901 people have received one dose and 7,928 have completed the two-shot vaccine series statewide.

According to the figures available Wednesday, the number of individuals who have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine in area counties includes:

  • Big Stone: 363

  • Chippewa: 421

  • Kandiyohi: 1,207

  • Lac qui Parle: 315

  • Meeker: 442

  • Pope: 471

  • Redwood: 438

  • Renville: 561

  • Stearns: 3,546

  • Swift: 339

  • Yellow Medicine: 445

The vaccine data web page is updated at 11 a.m. daily, but it can take up to 48 hours for data to be reported to the state and processed.
