Kandiyohi County passes 2,000 COVID-19 cases as numbers continue to rise across the region

Wednesday was another challenging day in regard to COVID-19 across the state as more than 3,700 new cases were confirmed and 31 new deaths reported. Cases continue to rise in the local region as well.

WILLMAR — While Stearns County added another 192 confirmed positive COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, Kandiyohi County reached another milestone, passing more than 2,000 positive cases overall.

There were 15 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in Kandiyohi County, bringing the cumulative total to 2,003.

Stearns County also reported the death of an individual in their early 80s plus one probable positive case.

Other local counties saw new positive cases in the single digits. Meeker and Yellow Medicine counties each reported eight newly confirmed cases, and Big Stone, Lac qui Parle, Redwood and Swift counties each added seven cases. Pope County reported five cases, Renville County added four and Chippewa County reported three.

Statewide there were 3,772 newly reported confirmed cases and 72 newly reported probable cases.

The state recently began reporting probable cases based on antigen testing. Confirmed cases are based on polymerase chain reaction tests.

That brings the state's cumulative total to 160,923, which includes 160,070 confirmed and 853 probable cases.

Of the cumulative number of cases, 15,263 of them are health care workers.

There were 31 additional deaths attributed to COVID-19, for a current total of 2,505 deaths from confirmed cases and 25 from probable cases.

Most of the deaths, 1,760, have occurred in long-term care or assisted living facilities, and 2,031 of the deaths were 70 years or older.

The Minnesota Department of Health is also reporting that 136,457 of the state's reported positive cases no longer need to self-isolate.

So far in Minnesota, there have been approximately 2,949,591 completed tests, including 2,914,937 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and 34,654 antigen tests. And approximately 1,919,612 people have been tested since Jan. 20.

The information was included in the latest Minnesota Department of Health daily situation update , released at 11 a.m. daily. The data released are current as of 4 p.m. the day before.

  • Meeker County: 405

  • Renville County: 323
  • Stearns County: 7,141
  • Swift County: 263
  • Yellow Medicine County: 353
