ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Department of Health on Thursday, Jan. 13, reported 11,510 new cases of COVID-19 as the state continued to see an unprecedented surge of new infections.
While daily case counts do not always give an accurate picture of the level of community spread, Thursday marked the fourth day in a row the state had reported more than 10,000 new cases in a day.
Bigger picture measures of community health risk also continued to soar. The seven-day rolling average test positivity rate as of Jan. 5, the most recently available date for that figure, was 20.7%. That breaks a pandemic record for the fifth daily report in a row.
The seven-day rolling average for new cases per 100,000 also continued to climb into record territory — 145.9.
Both figures are well beyond the threshold set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as "high-risk" — 10% for tests and 10 cases per 100,000.
