Prep Football: Paynesville wins 5AA; Pierz downs NLS in 6AAA

COLLEGEVILLE — Falling snow and steady winds didn't bother the Paynesville Bulldogs in the Section 5AA championship game on Friday at St. John's University.

The top-seeded Bulldogs convincingly ended Holdingford's string of section upsets with a 32-7 victory.

The Bulldogs improved to 8-2, with the only losses coming against BOLD a 10-1 Section 5A finalist, and 10-0 Pierz, the Section 6AAA champion.

The Bulldogs open the Class AA state quarterfinals against Barnesville at 7 p.m. Friday at Alexandria High School. Barnesville won the Section 8AA championship 29-22 over Hawley on Friday at the Fargodome.

Holdingford, the No. 6 seed, defeated No. 3 ACGC in the first round and No. 2 Minnewaska in the section semifinals. But the Bulldogs, a 32-22 winner over Eden Valley-Watkins in the semifinals, were too much for the 6-5 Huskers.

Pierz downs NLS

Pierz' Reese Kapsner scored three touchdowns and teammate Jalen Jansen found the end zone twice as the Pioneers defeated New London-Spicer 40-14 in the Section 6AAA championship game at St. Cloud State University's Husky Field on a blustery, snowy Friday.

Jansen opened the scoring with a 22-yard TD run and Kapsner added two more rushing touchdowns, one on a 60-yard jaunt, to put the Pioneers up 24-6 at halftime.

Kapsner and Jansen both scored second-half TDs to put the game out of reach.

NLS defeated St. Cloud Cathedral and No. 2-seed Albany on the road to reach the championship game. The Wildcats finished the season 7-4.
