With 12 hits and every starter getting at least one hit, a fast start got Willmar a 9-1 Section 6AAA win over Dassel-Cokato on Monday.

"Top to bottom our entire lineup hit today, which was good to see," said Cardinals head coach Tom DeBoer. "Even our outs were hard hit. It was nice to get up early."

After a pair of walks to open the bottom of the first inning, Willmar got both runners home on a two-run, opposite-field triple from Drey Dirksen. Then in the second, back-to-back RBI singles by Nate Spencer and Caleb Owens made it a 4-0 game.

The visiting Chargers got a run in the top of the third, only for the Cardinals to respond with five runs in the bottom half. AJ Backes had an RBI double, followed immediately by a two-run single by Spencer. Andy Schultz connected with his own RBI single, and an error led to one more Willmar run in the frame.

On the mound, Dirksen started and tallied four strikeouts over three innings. Tanner Bauman took over in the fourth and got the win after striking out five in three innings of work.

"(Dirksen and Bauman) were throwing first-pitch strikes and that makes such a difference," DeBoer said. "Their first-pitch fastballs were hitting the corners."

Backes and Gunnar Banks both finished with two hits, and Spencer drove in a team-high three RBIs in the victory.

On Thursday, the Cardinals are back at Bill Taunton Stadium in Central Lakes Conference action against St. Cloud Tech.
