'At Wit's End': Erma Bombeck story on stage at The Barn
WILLMAR — "Erma Bombeck: At Wit's End" will be on stage at The Barn Theatre in Willmar Mother's Day weekend, May 11 and 12.
Performances are at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 12. Tickets are $35, available at The Barn box office, 321 Fourth St. S.W. in downtown Willmar, or by calling 320-235-9500.
Barbara Chisholm — billed as one of Austin, Texas' most visible and lauded actors, with appearances in more than 50 stage productions and numerous film and television role — stars in the one-woman show. It is being directed by Willmar High School graduate David Esbjornson, world-renowned director, also recognized for developing new works.
Esbjornson developed the script for "At Wit's End" along with writers Peggy Engels and Allison Engels.
The 90-minute piece has had "successful first-class productions" at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and at The Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., where it premiered, both starring Chisholm.
The project "celebrates the life and humor of Erma Bombeck, one of the most successful syndicated humorists who ever lived and one of my mother's great pleasures," said Esbjornson. "The fact that throughout her career she maintained her duties as a housewife and a mother of three children makes her success all the more impressive."
The play celebrates family, children, career, marriage and personal politics, he added.
By bringing this production to life on The Barn Theatre's stage, Esbjornson and his sisters hope to honor his parents' and their family's contributions to The Barn and its legacy.
